A rush of rainstorms in recent weeks left Glen Helen Raceway primed for a good race, and the annual 3Bros 6 Hours of Glen Helen lined up at the perfect time on the calendar. A Husqvarna super team of Dalton Shirey and Sam Pretscherer, fresh off a stellar performance together at the Mint 400 desert race, piloted the number-46 Husqvarna TE300 to the overall victory with 31 laps around the famed raceway, besting the record-setting 197 teams.

Racers were treated to a fast and fun course consisting of fast ridge roads, high-speed sand washes, the off-road truck track, and the iconic motocross tracks around the Glen Helen facility. At the drop of the flag, the Open Pro riders rushed into the Talladega first turn, with Ciaran Naran leading the charge on the number-three Hero Racing Honda CRF450X. Through the first few corners, the riders jockeyed for position, with Trevor Hunter on the number 22 DirtBikeTest.com YZ450FX leading the pack onto the ridgeline. Wet dirt led to all-out racing in the opening laps of the race on the well-thought-out course laid out by the SRA GP crew.

Hunter led the first half of the opening lap before Pretscherer slid by the Yamaha on his Husqvarna TE300, taking the lead and setting the tone for the rest of the race. Just a few corners later, Hunter tucked the front end in the mud, allowing Naran to slip by into the runner-up position. By the end of the first lap, the top four bikes were wheel to wheel with the defending series champion on the number-one bike, Tyler Nicholson, in tow with the lead bikes as they all rode down pit row.

The start of the second lap saw an all-out drag race with the lead bikes all swapping positions. Pretscherer maintained control of the lead, but Naran and Hunter traded spots several times throughout the lap before Naran took control of the runner-up position with Hunter on his Yamaha right behind. Coming up through the pack from the second row, young 250 Pro rider Dustyn Davis (number 508) climbed through the lead pack, eventually moving into second overall by lap four on his Zip-Ty Racing GasGas EX250F.

Through the first three hours of the race, the Husqvarna duo of Pretscherer and Shirey held the lead, but the young teens, Davis and Brennen Watson, challenged the eventual winners, closing the gap down to less than a second at times. As the race wore on, the experience and endurance of the two NHHA champions prevailed as they pulled away for the win in the final hours, besting the young GasGas team by nearly three minutes at the checkered flag. Davis/Watson finished second overall and won the Open Exp/Int class in the process.

Behind them, the fight continued with the Naran/Arturo Salas/Shane Logan trio and the Hunter/Hayden Hintz and Nicholson/Thomas Dunn teams all holding the upper hand at one point in the race. The last half of the race saw the Hero Racing Baja team lock into third overall where they’d remain for the rest of the race. Hunter/Hintz settled into fourth, and Nicholson/Dunn rounded out the top five, the final team to remain on the lead lap.

Sixth overall and first in the 250 Exp/Int class, the Carson Tryon/Harlem Nelson/Kodiak Lehman team started off their title defense with another class win, finishing with 29 laps ahead of second in class and seventh overall Evan Shine and team. Max Lieberman’s Open Exp/Int team finished second in class and eighth overall, while the Cycle News team finished ninth overall and won the Industry class. The trio of Noah Kepple, Ryan Nitzen and Jesse Ziegler piloted a stock CRF250RX for a total of 28 laps, just five seconds ahead of Family class winner Jacob Ortiz in 10th overall.

The toughest of them all, the Ironman class, saw 52 brave racers line up to solo the entire race. Nick Stover topped the stacked class with 28 laps and finished 13th overall after starting on the last row. Sammy Montalvan and TJ Durst rounded out the top three, finishing with 27 and 26 laps, respectively.

Austin Mentzel’s team won the 85cc Mini class, finishing with 23 laps in 116th overall. Matthew Yarnell’s team won the 65cc class with 21 laps to their credit. Aubree Mitchell, piloting her 65cc KTM, soloed the race herself to complete 11 total laps and finish third in the 65cc class.

Piper Carver-Coons bested the Women’s field, completing 26 laps and finishing just over one minute ahead of Jessica Daniels’ team. Lauren Woods rounded out the Women’s podium with five teams in the division. Other notable finishers include James Dameron and co-winning the Open Novice category, Kelly Gelhaus’ team topping the 30+ Exp/Int class, and Pete Vetrano claiming the 60+ Expert win.

Next on the calendar is the 3Bros 10 Hours of Glen Helen, set to take place in early June as round two of the three-race endurance series. CN
